Plan your move step by step
Work through this list from about 8 weeks before your move, and you won't be caught out on the day.
6 to 8 weeks before
- Get your removal price and book your date. Friday and end-of-month dates go first.
- Declutter. Sell, donate or tip anything you don't want to pay to move.
- If you're renting, give your landlord notice and check what your tenancy says about cleaning.
- Start collecting boxes, tape and bubble wrap, or choose our packing service.
4 weeks before
- Tell your council you're moving for council tax.
- Set up Royal Mail redirection for your post.
- Let your gas, electric, water, broadband and TV licence providers know your moving date.
- Start packing rooms you don't use much, like the loft, garage and spare room.
2 weeks before
- Update your address with your bank, DVLA, GP, dentist, employer and insurance.
- Sort out school changes if you have children.
- Check parking at both homes. Ask neighbours to leave a space, or ask your council about suspending a parking bay.
- Measure big furniture against doors and stairs in your new home.
1 week before
- Pack everything except the things you use every day.
- Label every box with the room and what's inside.
- Use up food from the freezer.
- Confirm the time and both addresses with your removal company.
The day before
- Defrost the freezer and drain the washing machine. On our Standard move, we disconnect it for you.
- Pack an essentials box: kettle, mugs, tea, phone chargers, toilet roll, medicines, bedding and a change of clothes.
- Keep documents, keys, jewellery and valuables with you, not on the van.
Moving day
- Take meter readings and photos at both homes.
- Do a last walk round: cupboards, loft, shed and garden.
- Show the team anything fragile or anything that isn't coming.
After you move
- Register with a new GP and dentist if you need to.
- Check your post is being redirected.
- Unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first.

Are there any hidden fees?
No. Your price covers everything you've told us about, including mileage, stairs, lifts, blankets, wrapping and insurance. There are no booking, admin or fuel charges. Your price only changes if your move changes, for example more to move or harder access on the day. Extra time is £100 per hour, and we always agree it with you first. If you've got less to move than you told us, let us know and we'll look at your price again.
How far ahead should I book a removal company?
Ideally 4 to 6 weeks, and more for Fridays, end-of-month dates and the summer. If your dates are tight, get your price online and ask; we can sometimes fit moves in at short notice.
What should I pack in my essentials box?
Kettle, mugs, tea and coffee, phone chargers, toilet roll, medicines, bedding, towels, a change of clothes, basic tools and anything you'll need on the first night.
